2012 Seismic Exploration News Reports

High frequency multi-beam echo sounders are often used to scare away whales and dolphins as a precurcor to using a controlled seismic source of energy, such as a specialized air gun or a seismic vibrator to map the ocean floor during exploration. Due to the extremely high level of noise produced by seismic air-guns (that endanger large whales) ramping-up noise levels over hours of start-up is a legal requirement. The use of echo sounders avoids this delay. However, even the echo sounder can be dangerous to smaller whales and dolphins if it scares the animals into situations where they can die. This is just as serious of an issue.
